Munising the county seat for Alger County is located on M-28. Population: 3,083. It is the western gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Grand Island is located directly north of town. The large number of waterfalls in and around Munising make it a popular tourist destination. The town on the east shore of Munising Bay began in 1850 when the Munising Iron Company bought the land and platted the village, known as Old Munising and later as East Munising. William A. Cox became the first postmaster of Munising on December 22, 1858. The office was closed on April 10, 1873, as the Munising Iron Company failed and the office was alternately opened and closed as other iron firms continued the enterprise.
In 1894, Timothy Nester and his associates began building the present city at the foot of the harbor where it was platted in 1895. Arthur S. Nester became the postmaster of its permanent post office on January 4, 1895. Incorporated as a village in 1897 and as a city in 1915. The county seat since 1902. It was in Schoolcraft County until Alger was organized in 1885. Munising, a change from Minissing, was Indian for island in a lake, or near the island, and was so called after Grand Island opposite. Alger Falls on Alger Creek, about one mile south of Munising where M-94 meets M-28. This waterfall cascades down 30 feet of rock and can be easily seen along the east side of M-28, although the water flow varies considerably.

Alger Underwater Preserve Phone: (800) 292-7800. The Alger Underwater Preserve is located on the south shore of Lake Superior near the city of Munising in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This area of Lake Superior’s shoreline includes the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Island and the sheltered waters of Munising Bay. The Alger Underwater Preserve offers several unusual diving attractions including ”sea caves”, intact shipwrecks, and underwater interpretive trails.

East Channel Lighthouse, Hiawatha National Forest, Grand Island, Munising, MI 49862, Phone: (906)786-4062. Built in 1863, this lighthouse sits on the southeast shore of Grand Island on private property and was automated in 1913. The lighthouses function was replaced by the Munising Range Lights.

Hiawatha Water Trail, PO Box 7131, Marquette, MI 49855. Gitche Gumee, the Ojibwa (Native American) name for Lake Superior, has inspired all who have stood on her shore or paddled her waters. Running 120 miles from Big Bay to Grand Marais Michigan on Lake Superior’s south shore, the Hiawatha Water Trail (HWT) follows a shoreline paddled by Native Americans, Voyageurs and early European explorers.
