Kincheloe is located east of I-75 in Chippewa County. Founded by the U. S. Army Air Force in 1941 as Kinross Auxiliary Field. In 1947, the Air Force became a separate branch of the services and it became Kinross Air Force Base. In 1959, it was renamed in honor of Captain Iven C. Kincheloe. A native of Cassopolis, Michigan, he was a jet ace in the Korean conflict and later a test pilot for the X-2 experimental rocket-powered aircraft. He died in July, 1958, in attempting to eject from a F-104 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
